Effectiveness of Climbing Lanes for Slow-Moving Vehicles When Riding Uphill: A Microsimulation Study

چکیده

Long uphill stretches of single-carriageway rural roads with one lane per travel direction may reduce the Level Service (LoS), due to decreased speed heavy vehicles. In those circumstances, a slowdown traffic, resulting in formation platoons, be generated difficulty performing overtaking maneuvers safely. To solve this critical issue, an additional (climbing) for slow vehicles included road platform. This study aims evaluate effectiveness such climbing lanes real case Italy (National Road n. 4 “Via Salaria”—around 44+000 km). Using microsimulation model implemented VISSIM, analyzes speeds and times, delays, queuing waiting comparing Actual Scenario (AS) without lanes, two counterfactual scenarios: first (CS1) three second (CS2), just stretches, which CS1 are merged together. The obtained results confirm installing on sections described characteristics, potential models also carry out kind evaluations.
